Use chlorhexidine mouthwash twice a day for 1 week.
Resume normal toothbrushing 24 hours after the procedure (excluding periodontal surgery).
Ensure toothbrushing and mouthwashing are separated by at least 2 hours, as the calcium in toothpaste deactivates the mouthwash.
Bite on a clean cotton handkerchief or a bite pack (not tissue) with constant pressure for 30 mins, if bleeding occurs.
If bleeding is not controlled after 30 mins, call the practice during office hours, or go to your local A&E department.
Take painkillers if required. Paracetamol and ibuprofen are effective, but avoid aspirin, which may promote bleeding. (Always read the package insert since these painkillers may not be suitable for you.)
Take things easy for the rest of the day.
Remember that it is normal for there to be some pain, swelling, soreness and bruising after a dental operation. There may also be difficulty opening the mouth. All this should significantly improve within 1 week – otherwise, please contact the practice.
Rinse your mouth or spit, for the first 24 hours.
Have food or drink straight away – your mouth will still be numb and you may bite your lips, cheeks or tongue.
Have cigarettes for at least 24 hours. Ideally, avoid them for a minimum of one week because they can cause a very painful local infection. (This may be an opportunity to give up!)
Eat hard foods for 24 hours.
Bite your lips, cheeks or tongue – they may be numb.
