Health clearance is required for new health care workers who have direct patient contact. It is designed to ensure that an individual is fit for all aspects of their job role and to reduce the risk of healthcare worker-to-patient transmission of infectious diseases.

Individuals need to comply with the Department of Health guidance on screening and immunisations. The requirements for this will depend upon the individual and the job role.

We are SEQOHS-accredited and are able to provide Occupational Health Clearance directly to medical practitioners applying to join the NHS National Performers List, as well as nurses and opticians.

We are a SEQOHS-accredited private clinic

What is meant by ‘Health Clearance’

A certificate of health clearance is issued to an individual where applicants have satisfied the requirements set out by the Department of Health to practise safely.

Some employers ask for you to obtain a health clearance certificate to practice.  In order to receive a health clearance certificate you will need to complete a health questionnaire which will be assessed by one of our occupational health team. Your information along with your vaccination history will be reviewed. You will be advised if you have met the requirements to receive health clearance, or recommended if any blood test or vaccinations are needed to be compliant. The Fleet St Clinic is able to offer a discounted rate for health care workers who require blood test or immunisations as part of their health clearance.

    FAQs

If you are working in healthcare you will need to provide evidence of having received certain vaccinations, or demonstrating immunity to certain infectious diseases. The exact requirements of this will depend upon the type of work you are doing.  General requirements include demonstrating immunity to measles, rubella, varicella, tuberculosis, and hepatitis B.

Exposure Prone Procedures (EPPs) are those procedures where the worker’s gloved hand may be in contact with sharp instruments, needle tips or sharp tissue (e.g. spicules of bones or teeth) inside a patient’s open body cavity, wound or confined anatomical space where the hands or fingertips may not be completely visible at all times. You will only need this type of clearance if you are intending to perform such tasks.

EPP clearance requires blood tests to be taken for HIV, Hepatitis B Surface antigen and hepatitis C antibody. These tests must be taken from an ID validated, and therefore you will need to show photo ID during your appointment is you require EPP clearance.

There are three lists of National Performers, which are maintained for dentists, doctors and opticians. These lists are managed by NHS England, and include occupational health screening to check the practitioner is fit to work and has had the necessary tests and immunisations required for their role.

If you need health clearance to join the National Performers List, contact the clinic or occupational health team prior to making an appointment.
