The Fleet Street Clinic is the first medical practice in the UK to offer point-of-care PCR testing for Colds, Flu (including Swine Flu), other Upper Respiratory Viruses and Bacteria. PCR testing takes the guesswork out of diagnosis. There is no need to wait for samples to be sent away, or for time-consuming cultures or microscopy. We test for the top 20 causes of upper respiratory symptoms, all at the same time.
We can then provide you with the correct treatment – antibiotics or anti-viral medication – right away. Early anti-viral treatment can cut the duration and severity of flu symptoms.
We can also help avoid speculative and unnecessary treatment when it is clearly not needed.
If you have symptoms now, and it is important for you to have a precise diagnosis, we’ll do our best to help. There’s a good chance we could even see you today!
PCR stands for “polymerase chain reaction” – a biochemical method of searching samples for the tiniest traces of genetic material belonging to disease-causing organisms, and then amplifying them to a point where they can be easily detected. PCR tests are highly sensitive, so all we need is a tiny sample.
A respiratory sample is taken using a tiny swab – a bit like a cotton bud. The swab is simply touched against the back of the nasal cavity. The swab then goes into a small plastic tube containing 2ml of preservative, and can be tested right away. The sample takes 65 minutes to process.
The test looks for the “top 20” causes of upper respiratory infection, including cold and influenza viruses, and whooping cough. All 20 organisms are tested for at he same time.
