Rabies Vaccination
RABIES VACCINATION AT FLEET STREET CLINIC LONDON
What is Rabies?
Rabies is a very serious viral infection that affects the brain and nervous system. You can catch rabies from an infected animal if you have not been vaccinated.
- India, Asia and Africa have the highest rate of deaths from rabies each year, most commonly from dog bites, although rabies can be present in any mammal
- There is no effective cure for rabies, so pre-exposure immunisations followed by post-exposure treatment is the recommended course of action
- Our country vaccination guide helps you assess whether you’ll be at risk of rabies when travelling
- Fleet Street Clinic provides expert travel advice and vaccinations in London to all travellers
Rabies Vaccination
- The best way to prevent rabies is to have a vaccination before you are exposed
- This requires 3 doses of the vaccine at least three weeks before departure (Day 0,7,21)
- The vaccination can be given from birth
IF YOU SUSPECT YOU’VE BEEN BITTEN BY AN ANIMAL WITH RABIES
- Even after having the rabies vaccine, you should seek medical care in the event of an animal bite
- In case of an animal bite, scratch or lick – clean skin for 5 minutes with soap and water, or iodine solution or alcohol – then seek urgent medical care
- If you’ve had your immunisations, you will require two doses of rabies vaccination, 3 days apart
- If you are exposed to rabies and have not been vaccinated, a more intensive treatment of 5 vaccinations over a 30-day period, plus an injection of immunoglobulin
- As treatment is urgent and not available in certain countries, this can mean departing from the holiday early at considerable cost and risk
