A significant chikungunya virus outbreak is currently unfolding in southern China. Since mid-June 2025, over 7,000 cases have been reported, marking the largest outbreak of its kind in the country. The virus, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, causes symptoms such as high fever, severe joint pain, fatigue and rash. While rarely fatal, the disease can lead to debilitating joint pain that may persist for months or even years.
Chinese authorities have implemented stringent measures to control the spread, including isolating infected individuals, spraying insecticides and releasing mosquito-eating fish. Despite these efforts, the outbreak has raised concerns globally, prompting the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a Level 2 travel alert, advising travellers to take enhanced precautions.
These are the symptoms to watch out for:
– High fever
– Severe joint and muscle pain
– Fatigue
– Rash
– Headache
Symptoms usually appear 3 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. While most individuals recover within a week, some may experience prolonged joint pain.
If you’re planning to travel to affected areas or regions with similar climates we recommend you follow these precautions: – Use insect repellent containing DEET (shop here), Wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves and trousers – Stay in air-conditioned rooms – Don’t keep water out / avoid it to reduce mosquito breeding sites
We are currently offering the Chikungunya vaccine at Fleet Street Clinic. The vaccine is highly recommended for those traveling to regions with active outbreaks, such as China, India and other parts of Asia. If you’re planning a trip, we highly recommend you consider vaccinating ahead of your journey and are here to guide you through. To book your appointment click here.
