Travel Advice for Ethiopia 

With direct flights to Addis Ababa taking little over 7 hours, many people are choosing to travel to Ethiopia in East Africa. Popular destinations include the ancient monasteries of Lalibela, trekking in the Simien mountains or visiting the hottest place on earth at the Danakil depression, travellers should ensure they have received pre-travel health advice to ensure they stay healthy whilst abroad.

It is recommended that all travellers are up to date with their routine immunisations. All travellers should ensure that they have received a vaccination against diphtheria, tetanus and polio in the last 10 years. All travellers are advised to ensure they have been vaccinated against Hepatitis A and Typhoid

The yellow fever virus is present in the western parts of Ethiopia, and therefore a vaccination against  Yellow Fever may be advised for certain areas of the country

There also may be a requirement to provide evidence of vaccination against Yellow Fever if entering Ethiopia from a country that has a risk of Yellow Fever.

 There may be a need for additional immunisations. Depending on the nature of the trip, destinations visited, duration of travel and activities, other vaccinations could be considered. These include:-

There is a risk of malaria in all parts of Ethiopia except Addis Ababa and anti-malarial medication may be advised.

Some parts of the country are at altitude, and considerations to prevent acute mountain sickness should be sought.
