FAQs

Lateral flow tests are also called antigen tests, LFD (lateral flow device) tests, or IFA (immunofluorescent assays) tests.

They are designed to detect protein made by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

An antigen test is another name for a lateral flow test. These tests are useful because you can do them yourself at home and they can provide you with rapid results in 15 minutes.

The UK sensitivity standard for lateral flow tests is low: they are required to detect at least 60 per cent of positive cases. This compares with UK standards for PCR tests, that must detect at least 95 to 99 per cent of positive cases.

A positive result on a home lateral flow test is seen as coloured lines on the test strip.

The change in colour should occur in 2 areas; the control line and your diagnosis line. If you are positive, your test will display both lines.

It works by featuring a chemical strip that has been impregnated with artificial antibodies designed to react with any viral proteins present in the sample being tested. Meaning if you currently have Covid-19, the strip will change colour.

Lateral flow tests are good as they provide quick results, however, the results are not as accurate as rt-PCR tests. This is because lateral flow tests are self-administered and self-tested whereas rt-PCR test samples are taken by healthcare professionals and results are analysed in a laboratory. Although more accurate, it does take longer to get rt-PCR results.

The UK sensitivity standard for lateral flow tests is low: they are required to detect at least 60 per cent of positive cases. This compares with UK standards for PCR tests, that must detect at least 95 to 99 per cent of positive cases.

Yes, you can continue to test using lateral flow tests even though you have had the vaccine.

Lateral flow testing confirms a current infection not your vaccination status.

Lateral flow tests depend on enough viral protein being present in the sample in order to be detectable.

This means they tend to turn positive only at the height of a Covid-19 infection.

LFTs can usefully confirm infection in people who are symptomatic, though a negative result cannot reliably rule out infection.

In our opinion, lateral flow tests are not a good screening test for people with no symptoms, because they tend to miss early stage infections. They may readily give people a false sense of security, which can sometimes be more harmful than doing no test at all.

We are conscientious that some of our patients or their close family members are deemed clinically vulnerable. Therefore, all our staff are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 for your protection and peace of mind.
